WICHITA, Kan.- Despite threatening weather earlier in the day, Wichita State (34-10) and Kansas State (26-15) managed to get in nine innings without a drop in front of a season-high crowd of 6,017 at Eck Stadium. The three-and-a-half hour marathon ended with a 2-1 Kansas State victory, and a season split as the Shockers defeated the Wildcats, 8-3, earlier this season in Manhattan, Kan.

The Wildcats would take a 2-0 lead before the Shockers could manage to score. With two outs in the third, back-to-back singles by Adam Muenster and Derek Bunker put two on board. A fly ball popped out of Danny Jackson’s glove and allowed Muenster to score on the error.

Reliever Kyle Touchatt struck out Eli Rumler before hitting Nate Tenbrink with a pitch in the top of the fourth. Brett Scott then singled in the right-center gap and a Tyler Ruch fielder’s choice drove in a run.

Wichita State cut the lead 2-1 in the bottom half of the frame. Matt Brown led off with a line drive to right field and advanced to second on a stolen base. The junior outfielder moved up on a ground ball from Josh Workman and crossed home via a passed ball.

Starter Tyson Fugett and the WSU bullpen kept the Wildcats close, scattering eight hits over the nine innings and allowing only one earned run five walks, while striking out 11. The Shockers’ bats never got hot, however, as Wichita State stranded eight base runners, half of them in scoring position.

Fugett (0-1) was charged was with the loss, giving up one unearned run in three innings. Chase Bayuk improved to 4-4 on the season and Daniel Edwards earned his 10th save of the year.

Andy Dirks was responsible for two of the Shockers’ five hits. Bunker was the only Wildcat with a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a walk.

No. 7 Wichita State faces off against No. 3 Arkansas on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Fayetteville, Ark. The game can be heard live on KNSS 1330 and will also be broadcast on Kansas Now Channel 22.
