WICHITA, Kan.- Damon Sublett was a triple short of the cycle, which included an inside the park homerun, and Andy Womack threw 3.2 perfect innings of relief in Wichita State's (42-14) 15-5 defeat of South Alabama (25-22) Wednesday night at Eck Stadium.
Wichita State used a six-run sixth inning to open the game up, 13-2. A lead-off error was followed with three consecutive singles as Matt Brown and Conor Gillaspie picked up RBI's on their hits. Tyler Hill was hit by a pitch to load the bases and back-to-back singles by Dusty Coleman and Cody Lassley plated three more. Andy Dirks capped the inning with a sacrifce fly to left field that brought in Coleman.
Ryan Jones, in a pinch-hit appearance in the seventh, hit his first collegiate homerun. Hill drew a walk in the eighth and came around on an error and wild pitch.
Jeff Cunningham had struck out three times on the night, but hit his second homerun of the series off of reliever Matt Smith. Coleman started the ninth by striking out the first two batters, but then the Jaguars managed two more runs before a fly ball to right field ended the game.
The Jaguars roughed up starter Tyson Fugett for two runs in the top of the first. Lance Heisler and Clint Toomey led off the game with back-to-back singles and both runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from David Doss. Eric Shortell crossed the runs with a single through the left side.
The Shockers responded with four runs in the bottom half to take a lead they never relinquished. Dirks drew a lead-off walk and Derek Schermerhorn delivered a hit-and-run single, putting runners at the corners. Damon Sublett doubled off the right field wall to plate Dirks. Gillaspie reached second on a fielder's choice, but the pitcher's throw home went to the back stop and allowed two to score. Gillaspie moved up on a wild pitch and ball four to Josh Workman got passed the catcher, scoring the fourth run.
Fugett gave up a lead-off double to Doss in the third, but then struck out his third batter before Womack took over on the mound. Womack (3-0) was solid through his 3.2 innings of work, never allowing a base runner and striking out a career-high eight to earn the win.
Lassley blooped a single to shallow left field and stole second to start the bottom of the fourth frame. Then with two outs, Sublett powered one into the gap in left field and slid under the tag at home for an inside the park homerun.
Hill doubled in Workman, who had reached on a walk and stolen second, to make it 7-2 after five innings.
Sublett ended the night going 3-for-6 with three runs and three RBI. Schermerhorn, Hill, Brown and Lassley each contributed two hits.
