LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The 63rd ranked Wichita State men’s tennis team stopped a two dual-match losing streak and defeated No. 64 Georgia State, 4-3, during the first day of the USC Region of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Today’s match took place at the Marks Stadium on USC’s campus in L.A.
A Shocker victory during doubles play began the matchup. The team of Tomislav Gregurovic/Tin Ostojic (WSU) defeated the team of Thomas Cook/Felipe Jaworski (Georgia State) by a score of 6-2.
Sofiane Chevallier/Robert Schulze of Georgia State won by a score of 6-4 over the team of Guillermo de Vilchez/Guillermo Nicol (WSU). The team of Eric Baum/Jannis Koeke (Georgia State) would then defeat Ilija Cuic/Jocelyn Devilliers of the Shockers by a score of 6-5 to earn the doubles point for Georgia State, giving the Panthers a 1-0 advantage going into singles play.
Ostojic also won his match in singles play. The 20th ranked player in the ITA’s Central Singles Rankings began today’s singles matches against Georgia State by defeating Jaworski 6-2, 6-0. This tied the dual match at one point a piece.
The Shockers would win two of the next three singles matches to take a 3-2 lead over the Panthers. Georgia State’s Chevallier beat Devilliers of WSU by a score of 6-3, 6-1. Cuic then defeated Cook 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 and de Vilchez won 6-3, 6-2, 6-5.
Schulze beat Nicol by a score of 5-6, 6-1, 6-4 to tie the dual-match at three wins apiece. Gregurovic of WSU won the last singles match of the day and clinched the dual-match for the Shockers with a 6-4, 5-6, 6-5 victory over Koeke of Georgia State.
The Shockers will face No. 4 USC (1-0) tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the USC Regional Championship of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. If the Shockers win, they will be invited to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Feb. 14-17 that will be hosted by Texas A&M.
No. 4 USC defeated Santa Clara by a score of 4-0 during the second match in the USC Region of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Trojans have five of their players ranked in the top-125 of the ITA’s National Singles Rankings. Ray Sarmiento is ranked No. 10, Yannick Hanfmann is ranked No. 32, Johnny Wang is No. 67, Michael Grant is No. 70, and Roberto Quiroz is ranked No. 113.
No. 4 USC doesn’t have any ranked teams in the ITA’s National Doubles Rankings, but they have four teams ranked in the ITA’s Southwest Doubles Rankings. Max de Vroome/Eric Johnson is No. 2, Quiroz/Sarmiento is No. 4, Rob Bellamy/Wang is No. 5, and Nick Crystal/Grant is No. 6.
