WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State University's 2012-13 men's basketball schedule is highlighted by 18 home games, a rematch with NCAA opponent VCU, and a trip to the 2012 Cancun Challenge, sixth-year head coach Gregg Marshall announced today.
WSU could play 11 teams that advanced to postseason play in 2012, and up to four 2012 NCAA Tournament opponents including VCU, Southern Mississippi, Creighton and and possibly Western Kentucky during the 2012-13 season.
WSU plays a rematch with its NCAA Tournament opponent in VCU, which defeated the Shockers, 63-61, in the first game of the NCAA Tournament in Portland, Ore. WSU will also play Southern Mississippi in WSU's third INTRUST Bank Arena game in downtown Wichita. Southern Miss lost to Kansas State in the NCAA Tournament. MVC foe Creighton also made an NCAA appearance in 2012, defeating Alabama, 58-57, and losing to No. 1 seed North Carolina, 87-73. The Shockers could also face Western Kentucky, which lost to Kentucky, 81-66, in the Cancun Challenge.
"We feel good about the schedule that we have put together," Marshall said. "We like the blend of home, away and neutral site games versus a wide variety of opponents. Our team will be challenged prior to conference play."
After opening the season against Pittsburg State in exhibition action Nov. 5, WSU opens its 107th regular-season against North Carolina Central Nov. 10 before travelling to Richmond, Va., for the ESPNU matchup with VCU. The game marks the first of five games in nine days for the Shockers, and is also the return trip from the 2011 BracketBusters event. VCU won that meeting, 68-67.
WSU returns home to play two home games in the Cancun challenge against Western Carolina and Howard, before leaving Nov. 18 for Cancun. The Shockers then play DePaul Nov. 20, and either Western Kentucky or Iowa, which went 1-1 in the 2012 NIT.
Another non-conference highlight is a game at Tulsa, which the Shockers will play for the 122nd time in history with WSU leading the series 61-60. WSU won, 77-67, in Tulsa a year ago, and 82-79, in 2010-11 in the renewal of the rivalry, which was also the Shockers' first game in the new INTRUST Bank Arena in downtown Wichita.
A home game against Northern Colorado is sandwiched between games at Air Force Dec. 2 in the MVC-MWC Challenge, and a game at Tennessee, Dec. 13.
WSU opens the Valley schedule Dec. 30 against UNI in Wichita before travelling to Drake and Bradley, Jan. 2 and 6th, respectively. WSU never plays more than two-straight home games or two-straight road games throughout the Valley schedule, while the Shockers play nine games in January and eight in February, including the 2013 Sears BracketBusters game at home Feb. 22 or 23rd.
Dates for the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Basketball Tournament are March 7-10, 2013 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
The MVC-TV Network games and ESPN games will be announced at a later date, while the local television schedule will be announced soon after.
The Sears BracketBusters Series opponent, game time and network will be announced in late January.
