Wichita, Kan.- No. 16 Wichita State (4-3) came back from an early deficit to top Le Moyne (2-6), 9-8, Tuesday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

Cody Lassley, hitless until the ninth inning, delivered a two-out single that drove home the winning run. Ryan Jones, aboard with a leadoff double, scored on Lassley’s gapper to left-center field.

The Dolphins jumped on freshman starter Clint Maune in his debut performance and took a 5-0 lead by the top of the third inning. With two outs in the second Sean Paino singled to shallow right field and Chris Edmondson drew a walk. Stephen Crawford drove in the runs with a single to center field.

A Mike Brown single started off the third inning and Phil St. Amant got on board via an error by third baseman Conor Gillaspie. Chris Haynes hit a sacrifice fly to cross one run and Corey O’Neill brought in the other with a double down the left field line. The runner advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground ball from Paino to take the five-run advantage over the Shockers.

Wichita State finally cracked Le Moyne starter Daniel Tunison in the bottom of the third as a leadoff triple by Tyler Weber sparked the offense. An infield single from Bret Bascue was enough to score the run and the sophomore left fielder motored it to second on a wild throw by the Dolphin third baseman. A passed ball advanced the runner and Andy Dirks was hit by a pitch to put men at first and third. A single plated Bascue and Gillaspie had a two RBI double to bring the WSU within one.

The Shockers knotted it at five when Tyler Hill drove one down the left field line to bring home Josh Workman who had reached on a single up the middle.
Le Moyne again took the lead in the fifth when singles by St. Amant and O’Neill boarded base runners. Paino doubled into a gap in right-center field off of reliever Tyler Fleming and drove in St. Amant.

Logan Hoch took over on the mound in the top of the fifth with two outs and struck out Edmondson for the final out of the inning, but came out a little shaky to start the sixth. Hoch allowed a leadoff hit to Alejandro Del Valle and walked Matt Nandin. A two-out single by St. Amant drove in two runs before Hoch got Haynes on strikes. The junior transfer sat down the next three batters in order in the seventh.

Back-to-back singles started a come back rally for the Shockers in the bottom of the eighth. Gillaspie fired one back up the middle and stole second, getting in position to score on a single popped over the shortstop’s head by Dusty Coleman. With two outs and one run short Hill delivered a triple that scored Coleman and tied the game at eight.

Khol Nanney improved to 2-0 on the season, grabbing the win with the final two innings of work. The senior right-hander struck out two and walked no one in two scoreless innings.

Jones led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance and added one RBI and two runs. Gillaspie went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Hill had clutch hits, tying the game in both the fourth and eighth, and finished the night going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

The Shockers will host Harvard this weekend in a three-game series starting Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
