FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Wichita State's men's team finished fifth and the women fourth, Saturday morning at the 26th Annual Chile Pepper Festival at Agri Park in Fayetteville, Ark. | Video |
"It was a solid performance by both teams, but we still have a lot of work to do," said Head Coach Kirk Hunter. "We finished ahead of a lot of South Central Region teams from 5th through 15th, so I feel we beat some very good teams.
"But to get better as a team, we need to have our one through seven in the 30-second range. We need to get ourselves closer to the top as a group."
On the women's side, Arkansas, the No. 7-ranked team in the nation, collected 17 points on the day, as they had runners place 1-2-3-4-7. Dominique Scott set a meet record time en route to her third individual title of the year, as she helped the No. 7-ranked Arkansas women's cross country team win
Lamar University finished second at the 26th Annual Chile Pepper Festival with a score of 78. Kansas State rolled in 116 points to finish third and Wichita State finished fourth with 128 points. Texas Tech rounded up the top five with a score of 153 points.
The Shockers were led by Sidney Hirsch and Ebiessa Nyandwi who finished 17th and 18th in scoring with times of 16:57.2 and 17:05.0 in the 5K run.
"We had a couple of women who were not at their best, and it definitely cost us," Hunter said. "But again, it was a good performance, especially by Sidney and Ebeissa, and a couple others like Katie McLeod. They did a wonderful job today, but we have to get all the women to hit on all cylinders in order for us to be more successful."
On the men's side, Arkansas All-American Stanley Kebenei collected his first individual title of the 2014 season to help the No. 17-ranked Arkansas men's cross country team win.
Kebenei collected an 8K time of 23:53.50 to pick up the first place finish as its scoring rotation collected 51 points to win the Chile Pepper Festival for the second straight season.
The Razorbacks finished 45 points ahead of second-place Lamar University (96). North Texas came in third with 106 points and UTEP placed fourth with 110 points. Wichita State rounded out the top five on Saturday with their score of 110.
Ugis Jocis led the Shockers with a 19th-place finish in 24:52 in the 8K run, while Kilian Schrenier was 21st in 24:54.3.
"We had a 30-second gap between one and six, and it caused us to have a pretty solid performance," Hunder said. "I feel like we can be a little bit stronger, but overall it was a good performance by the men.
"We need to get the guys that are back of our group a little closer. I think maybe have one through seven that is closer to the 30-second gap."
