WSU Wins Season Opener 3-0 Over Beavers



HONOLULU – Wichita State used 12 kills from Abbie Lehman to defeat Oregon State 3-0 in the season opener. The Shockers won by scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-19.

Lehman hit .429 in the match and also added two blocks. Freshman Shimen Fayad recorded a double-double in her first career match with 10 kills and 11 digs, while Emily Hiebert had 36 assists and Dani Mostrom had 19 digs.

The Shockers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first set after a kill from Jody Larson. A kill from Emily Hiebert gave WSU an 8-4 advantage, but the Beavers pulled to within 9-8 with a service ace. Another Hiebert kill gave the Shocks a 12-8 lead, but OSU stayed within striking distance and used a 4-0 run to take a 22-21 lead. WSU tied it at 22 on a kill by Katie Reilly and reached set point at 24-23 after a Beaver hitting error. WSU won the set 25-23 on a kill by Larson.

The second set went back and forth until the Beavers took an 11-9 lead after a Shocker hitting error. WSU tied it at 15 on a block by Larson and took a 17-16 lead on a kill by Abbie Lehman. OSU scored three of the next four points to go in front 19-18, but back-to-back kills from Reilly gave WSU a 21-20 lead. The Beavers tied it at 22 with a kill, but a Lehman kill put WSU up 23-22. OSU responded with two-straight kills for a 24-23 lead, but the Shockers closed out the set with two kills from Lehman and one from Fayad for a 26-24 win.

A kill by Lehman gave WSU a 13-10 advantage in the third set, but the Beavers scored three-straight to tie it at 13. A 3-0 Shocker run put WSU up 16-13 and a Lehman kill increased it to 21-17. WSU closed out the win 25-19 on a Beaver setting error.

The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Aug. 29 at 11:59 p.m. (Central) at No. 18 Hawaii.
