SAN MARCOS, Texas – Wichita State moved to 4-0 to open the 2023 season behind two wins on Saturday at the Texas State Tournament. The Shockers defeated Kent State, 7-0, and Villanova, 6-2.
Wichita State (4-0) has outscored its first four opponents, 28-5, and will look to wrap up an undefeated weekend Sunday vs. Texas State.
Sydney McKinney was a perfect 7-for-7 on Saturday with three doubles, five runs and an RBI. She's hitting .800 (12-for-15) through four games this season.
Lauren Lucas remains equally as locked in at the plate. She was 4-for-6 with three doubles and four RBI.
Lauren Mills added four hits – all singles – to go with a pair of RBI.
Game 1 vs. Kent State
McKinney added her second four-hit game through three games with a perfect 4-for-4 outing at the plate. She doubled twice, scored three times and drove in a run. Lucas continued her red-hot start with a 2-for-3 outing. She drove in two on a pair of doubles. Mills hit two singles and drove in a run.
Zoe Jones had two RBI on one hit and
Taylor Sedlacek recorded a pinch-hit single.
The star of the game was freshman
Alex Aguilar in the circle. Making her collegiate debut, Aguilar proceeded to throw a complete game shutout. She allowed only three hits to go with two walks and two strikeouts.
For the third straight game, Wichita State scored in the opening frame. A McKinney single and Lucas walk led to a two-out RBI single for Mills.
Wichita State made it a 3-0 game in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back doubles from McKinney and Lucas brought Jones to the plate, who promptly delivered a two-run single back up the middle.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth,
Sami Hood worked a two-out walk, which turned the lineup over to McKinney. McKinney sent the first pitch to the left-center gap for an RBI double to make it 4-0.
Wichita State tacked on three more in the sixth on a two-run double for Lucas and a Texas State throwing error.
Game 2 vs. Villanova
McKinney finished off her stellar night with a 3-for-3 night, including a double and two runs. Lucas drove in two more on another double. Mills recorded another multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Barnard and Jones both added solo homers.
Alison Cooper improved to 2-0 on the season after another solid outing in the circle. The sophomore lefty threw her second complete game of the weekend, allowing only two unearned runs on three hits and two walks. She struck out four.
McKinney opened the nightcap the same way as she did vs. Kent State – a base hit. The senior got on with a bunt single and immediately came around to score on a Lucas double. Two batters later Mills drove in Lucas with an RBI single.
The duo was responsible for another run in the third. A leadoff double from McKinney made way for Lucas to bring her in on an RBI single to right.
Barnard made it 4-0 on her first home run of the season, a solo shot to dead center.
Two walks and an error in the top of the sixth led to Villanova breaking up the shutout with two unearned runs. The Shockers immediately got those runs back in the bottom half behind Jones' solo home run and a final run crossing on a wild pitch.
